Amid persistent electricity crisis and struggles, these lavish allocations demonstrated by the Imo State government highlights the growing cost of alternative power supply across government institutions.

Other States expenditure on alternative power supply

Borno State spent N378 million on generators between January and September 2025, according to earlier reports by SaharaReporters. The state has also set aside an extra N1 billion for generator-related costs in the 2026 fiscal plan, with the equipment going to the Government House.

The budget description includes: “Purchase of 18 units of 500KVA generators in the Government House Clinic and other facilities.”

Similar trends can be seen in Kwara State, where N180 million has been set aside for the purchase and installation of a 500KVA soundproof Perkins (UK) generator at the governor’s Ilorin home.

Costs associated with generators continue to be substantial at the federal level. Approximately N6.626 billion has been set aside for fuelling generators and power plants across 20 Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), according to a review of the 2026 budget.

The majority of this expenditure is allocated to security and law enforcement organisations. With N1.2 billion, or around 18% of the entire allotment, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is in the lead.

The four organisations collectively spend more than 40% of the budget for generator fuel.

The numbers highlight governmental institutions’ ongoing reliance on diesel and gasoline-powered generators as a result of the country’s erratic electricity supply.
