The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed January 16, 2027, as the new date for the presidential and national assembly elections.
The commission also scheduled elections for the state houses of assembly and governorship for February 6, 2027.
In a statement released on Thursday, Mohammed Haruna, national commissioner and chairman of the information and voter education committee, revealed the updated election schedule.

The electoral body had previously scheduled the governorship and state houses of assembly elections for March 6, 2027, and the presidential and national assembly elections for February 20, 2027. However, the repeal of the Electoral Act of 2022 and the passage of the Electoral Act of 2026 compelled the electoral body to reevaluate the schedule.
INEC examined and realigned the previously published timetable to guarantee complete conformity with the new legislative framework, Haruna said, adding that the Electoral Act, 2026 included changes to the statutory timelines governing pre-election and electoral operations.
“Accordingly, the Commission has resolved as follows: Presidential and National Assembly Elections will now hold on Saturday, 16th January 2027, Governorship and State Houses of Assembly Elections will now hold on Saturday, 6th February 2027,” the statement reads.

“The revised timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general election reflecting these adjustments have been issued and can be accessed on the Commission’s official website and other official communication platforms.”

Additionally, Haruna announced that the August 8, 2026, governorship election in Osun State has been rescheduled for August 15, 2026.
This is the first time that the INEC will be holding the presidential election in January since the return of Democracy in 1999.
