INEC Under Fire: Tinubu’s Sack Plan Sparks Outrage
The Presidency has dismissed the rumours that were making the rounds regarding the sacking of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Mr. Mahmood Yakubu.
One WhatsApp message that went viral said the sack of Mahmood and the appointment of one Prof. Olamilekan. “INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmud Yakubu has now been replaced with Prof. Bashiru Olamilekan by President Tinubu,” read the message, which carried no attribution.
The presidency dismisses the claim as fake news.
In the statement, the Senior Special Adviser to the President on Digital and New Media, O’tega Ogra, urged the public to reject such speculation.
There would be an official announcement regarding the chairman of the INEC through the office of the Secretary of the Government of the Federation (SGF) or authorized government sources, he said.
In the same vein, Chief Press Secretary CPS to the INEC Chairman Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi when reacting to the development simply said: “Please, disregard. It is not true.”
Yakubu who is nearing the end of his second tenure in office is expected to leave the scene by the end of the year.
The procedure through which an INEC chairman is appointed involves the President nominating a candidate and sending his particulars to the Department of State Services, DSS, for profiling.
