Insecurity: Sheikh Gumi Issues Strong Warning, Says US Involvement Could Dangerously Attract Foreign Terror Groups to Nigeria

Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has cautioned against involving the United States in Nigeria’s battle against terrorism, warning that such a move could attract international terror groups into the country.

In a post shared on his Facebook page on Monday, Gumi stressed that Nigeria’s sovereignty must be protected, insisting that the nation’s military is capable of tackling insecurity if operations are conducted without what he described as “prejudices and deception.”

The cleric also dismissed claims that amnesty programmes have prevented the military from confronting bandits and Boko Haram insurgents, describing the allegations as false and misleading.

According to Gumi, Boko Haram has continued to operate nearly 17 years after the extrajudicial killing of its founder, Mohammed Yusuf, in 2009.

He argued that the limited success of military operations against insecurity is partly due to alleged abuses by security personnel and the killing of innocent civilians during operations.

Gumi further warned that allowing the United States to participate in Nigeria’s security operations could worsen the country’s security challenges by drawing global terror networks into the region.

He maintained that the Nigerian military has the capacity to address the crisis effectively if its operations are carried out transparently and without bias, both in the use of force and management of resources.
