US President Donald Trump has claimed that Iran’s missile capabilities have been severely depleted, adding that Tehran now has only a fraction of the arsenal it had before recent hostilities.
In an interview with NBC News’ Meet the Press, Trump asserted that the United States had “totally destroyed” the Iranian military apparatus. He estimated that Iran retains only a limited portion of its ballistic missile stockpile.
The US president also said, “They still have capacity. They have some missiles, they have some drones. I would say, percentage wise, maybe 21, 22 percent of their missiles.”
However, Trump’s optimistic evaluation stands in stark contrast to classified data that intelligence agencies recently delivered to US senators.
According to a detailed New York Times report on last month’s congressional briefings, Iran has successfully re-established operational control over 30 of its 33 missile sites along the strategic Strait of Hormuz
Despite these grim intelligence assessments, Trump publicly expressed confidence that maritime disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz would wrap up swiftly.
When pressed for specifics regarding how many commercial oil tankers military forces had safely escorted across the vital shipping lane, the president offered a vague but enthusiastic reply: “A lot. I’m not sure how many, but it’s a lot.”
Further predicting a close end to the tensions, Trump said, “It shouldn’t take long. One way or the other, it’s going to get done. And when it’s all straightened out, you’re going to have oil prices drop down to maybe even lower than they were.”
