Abbas Khamayar, a professor of international affairs in Tehran and former Iranian ambassador, has warned that Iran is growing impatient with the US naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz amid the Iran war.
Khamayar told Al Jazeera that “something is being prepared in the decision-makers’ circles — a surprise” based on recent military leadership appointments and secret discussions.
He pointed out that Iranians have been talking about the problem a lot lately.
“I do not believe the Iranians here will maintain their patience for much longer,” Khamayar warned, indicating that the ongoing naval blockade or the persistent “no war, no peace” situation could lead to “significant confrontations.”
He argued that any subsequent escalation would not be restricted to Iran and the United States if Washington does not reiterate its commitment to the current commitments contained in the memorandum of understanding with Tehran.
“There will be significant confrontations” that could potentially open new fronts and involve other regions, ultimately impacting “both regional and global levels,” Khamayar said.
Backstory…
On August 17, an Iranian official told Reuters that Tehran could move from a defensive posture to a “fully offensive” stance if Washington failed to implement the terms of the interim agreement. The official warned of “timely and precise” military action, including efforts to break the US naval blockade and potentially disrupt the Strait of Hormuz.
The warning came after Trump rejected extending the June agreement and continued demanding concessions from Tehran, particularly on its nuclear programme. Trump has also threatened further military and economic pressure.
Meanwhile, just two days ago, as diplomatic attempts between Washington and Tehran continue to stall, US President Trump urged that Iran surrender in order to end the Iran war with the United States.
Trump stated that Iran should “put up the white flag of surrender” in a phone interview with a Fox News reporter on Monday, indicating that his administration was still applying pressure on Tehran in spite of continuous attempts to resume talks.
