Netanyahu, Rival Fail to Secure Majority as Israel Election Produces Deadlock

Israel election produced a hung parliament, leaving neither Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition nor the opposition alliance led by Gadi Eisenkot with enough seats to form a government independently.

Final election results reveal that Netanyahu’s right-wing bloc secured 53 seats in the 120-member Knesset, while the Eisenkot-led opposition bloc gained 48 seats. Both coalitions fell short of the 61-seat majority required to govern.

This result reflects a significant decline for Netanyahu, whose political coalition previously held 68 seats at its peak in the prior parliament.

A record turnout among Arab Israeli citizens yielded a historic victory for parties representing the Arab minority, who collectively won 19 seats in Tuesday’s vote.

Although both major political blocs have ruled out forming a coalition with Arab-led parties, the strong performance of Ra’am and the Joint List significantly elevates their leverage in the upcoming government-formation talks.

The election outcome highlights a strategic shift among Arab Israeli voters, many of whom turned out in record numbers to unseat Netanyahu and remove far-right figures like outgoing National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich from power.

The election campaign also featured foreign interference allegations; Netanyahu and his coalition raised concerns over potential Qatari influence and referred Arab parties to the Shin Bet for investigation.

The outcome leaves Israel facing renewed political unpredictability, with upcoming coalition negotiations set to determine whether Netanyahu retains power or the opposition builds an alternative government.

Backstory…

Israel has experienced repeated political deadlocks in recent years, with deep divisions over Benjamin Netanyahu’s leadership, judicial reforms and the country’s security direction making it difficult for rival political blocs to form stable governments.

Netanyahu, who has dominated Israeli politics for years, has faced growing criticism over the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack, the subsequent war in Gaza and corruption charges against him. His opponents have also struggled to unite behind a single political alternative, contributing to the country’s prolonged political uncertainty.
