This information was disclosed by Dr. Abdullahi Sa’ad, Secretary of the Jigawa State Local Governments Councils Vice Chairmen Association of Nigeria, during a stakeholders’ town hall meeting on flood preparedness held in Ringim.

Dr. Sa’ad explained that the funding initiative follows recent flood forecasts by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), which identified Jigawa as one of the states at high risk. He further noted that approximately 21 local government areas in the state are expected to be affected.

To tackle the flood threat, Local Government Emergency Management Committees have been established under the offices of council vice chairmen to ensure effective coordination of disaster prevention and response at the grassroots level.

Dr. Abdullahi Sa’ad added that the state government has also formed a State Flood Committee, alongside 20-member committees in each local government area. These groups are responsible for leading public awareness campaigns, clearing drainage systems and waterways, and implementing other proactive flood mitigation measures.

At the event, the Managing Director of the Jigawa State Environmental Protection Agency (JISEPA), Mr. Adamu Sabo, highlighted that his agency is collaborating closely with SEMA to drive preventive efforts and reduce the potential impact of flooding in the state.

He called on residents to actively support the government’s efforts, stressing that “prevention is better than cure.”
