Kano Drug Center Seizes N1.3 Billion in Counterfeit Medicines and Contaminated Foods
The Kanawa Pharmaceutical Coordinated Wholesale Centre (KPP-CWC) has confiscated substandard drugs and unsafe food items valued at over N1.3 billion in Kano State.
On Thursday, Superintendent Pharmacist Furera Ado informed reporters in Kano that there is a particular focus on high-demand products, including antimalarials, antibiotics, and pain relievers.
She disclosed that analysis of the samples collected revealed that 40.3% of the pharmaceutical products did not meet the Active Ingredient Content test, indicating they were substandard.
Ado mentioned that some of the seized drugs have been turned over to the state committee on drug abuse for destruction. She cautioned that if these products had not been intercepted, they could have reached the public, potentially resulting in treatment failures and loss of life.
She also noted that the entire center is registered under a superintendent pharmacist, who oversees all professional activities.
“KPP will soon begin the interview process to recruit additional staff to strengthen and enhance the center’s operations,” she stated. “We have achieved significant success in identifying and confiscating fake, falsified, adulterated, counterfeit, and expired drugs, which is crucial in preventing the spread of illicit substances.”
