BREAKING: Kano NDC gov candidate picks Kwankwaso’s son as running mate

The Nigeria Democratic Congress(NDC) governorship candidate in Kano State, Aminu Gwarzo, has formally selected Rabiu Kwankwaso’s son,  Mustapha Kwankwaso as his running mate for the 2027 governorship election.

Gwarzo’s spokesperson, Ibrahim Shuaibu confirmed the development on Monday to sources.

Shuaibu also clarified that the decision comes following consultations with party stakeholders and aimed to strengthen the party’s chances ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He described Mustapha Kwankwaso as a committed party member whose selection would further consolidate the party’s support across the state.

He said, “The governorship candidate of our great party, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has selected Mustapha Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate for the 2027 governorship election in Kano State.”

Speaking further, Shuaibu claims that the decision demonstrates the party’s dedication to cohesion, inclusivity, and efficient representation.

His emergence is expected to further strengthen the influence of the Kwankwasiyya Movement within the NDC as the party ramps up preparations for the 2027 elections.

Meanwhile, Gwarzo, a former Deputy Governor of Kano State, secured the NDC governorship ticket after party leaders and stakeholders concluded a series of consultations.

Political observers also believe that the emergence of Mustapha Kwankwaso could significantly influence political realignments in Kano State ahead of the governorship election.

This comes shortly after widespread reports that Rabiu kwankwaso, Mustapha’s father threatened to leave the NDC.

Also recall that Peter Obi recently selected Kwankwaso snr as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election under the NDC.

Meanwhile,  Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has declared that he is open to forgiving his political son, Governor Yusuf and reconcile with him, adding that his affection for his former protégé has not diminished.

Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa, Kwankwaso stated that the door to reconciliation remains open. He also noted that Governor Yusuf was the one who chose to leave their political fold and that he would not turn him away if he decided to return.
