Rabiu Kwankwaso, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has said the party is keeping a close watch on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as preparations for the 2027 general election gather pace.

Kwankwaso made the remarks in Abuja during the NNPP national convention, shortly after the party’s newly re-elected executives were sworn in, with INEC officials in attendance. He stressed that the electoral commission plays a vital role in sustaining Nigeria’s democracy.
He also congratulated INEC on the appointment of its new national chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, noting that the credibility of elections largely rests on the commission’s actions and integrity.

“Let me thank all of you, especially those who came from far away. I also want to appreciate the INEC representatives here today and, through you, congratulate the newly appointed national chairman of the commission, Prof Joash Amupitan.
“I want to say so far so good, we are keeping our eyes on INEC because its job is so critical that it can make or mar democracy in this country. So we thank you for coming, and we look forward to an even better relationship between INEC and, of course, with our party,” he said.
The convention comes as the NNPP intensifies preparations for the 2027 polls, following its breakout performance in the 2023 general election.
