Following intelligence inputs of planned attacks on public infrastructure and other soft targets, the Kwara State Government has cautioned citizens to exercise caution during the New Year’s celebrations and crossover church services.

Mrs. Bolanle Olukoju, the Kwara state Commissioner for Communications, released a statement on Wednesday advising citizens to stay away from big gatherings and non-essential movements that might be targeted by criminal groups.

The statement claims that security intelligence showing that certain “bad faith actors” were planning to attack public spaces or government buildings in retribution for recent losses sustained at the hands of security authorities made the caution necessary.

“This advisory becomes necessary as intelligence reports show that some bad faith actors plan to hit government infrastructures or other soft targets to avenge recent losses they suffered” the statement read.

“The public is encouraged to exercise caution, avoid non-essential movements or large gatherings that may be targeted by kidnappers,” the statement added.

Additionally, the government asked the public to report any suspicious activity as soon as possible, especially any odd movements involving people riding in motorbike convoys.

While urging citizens to assist law enforcement, Olukoju stated that the state government was collaborating closely with security agencies to preserve peace and security over the holiday season.

She reaffirmed the government’s dedication to protecting civilians and urged them to celebrate the New Year with composure but vigilance.

This comes as Kwara State has in recent months witnessed a resurgence of security challenges, particularly in rural communities across Kwara South and parts of Kwara North, where cases of kidnapping, armed banditry and attacks on worship centres have been recorded.
