The Lagos State House of Assembly has formally suspended the planned demolition of houses and structures in Makoko area of the state.
Noheem Adams, the House’s majority leader, announced this in a statement on Tuesday.
According to our source, the halt follows a number of demonstrations by locals and campaigners against the demolition.

Recall that members of several civil societies, activists and residents of the area had earlier kicked against demolitions in the Makoko water front area.
Speaking on behalf of his colleagues, Adams clarified that following a discussion between politicians and community members, the house issued the order to halt the demolitions.

He continued by saying that the assembly will examine concerns related to the demolitions in collaboration with pertinent ministries and authorities.
Additionally, he revealed that every stakeholder will be appropriately involved in the exercise.

Adams, in the statement said, “On behalf of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, and honourable members of this House, we are taking this matter seriously. All ongoing demolitions should be stopped.”
This development follows the Lagos State Government announcement of its intention to spend roughly $10 million on revitalising Makoko, the expansive waterfront neighbourhood, despite protests calling for police and government accountability and outrage from locals and civil society organisations over recent demolitions that have left families homeless.
