Academic and non-academic staff across Lagos State-owned universities have threatened to embark on an indefinite strike beginning October 3, citing the state government’s failure to implement previously reached agreements with the trade unions.
The warning was issued on Friday during a media briefing by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Lagos State-owned universities, which declared that members would withdraw their services if their demands remain unfulfilled.
The union coalition comprises the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).
The industrial action affects Lagos State University (LASU), the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM), Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), and Lagos State University of Education (LASUED).
JAC Chairman Prof. Ibrahim Bakare announced that the strike would commence at midnight on Saturday, October 3, following the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum issued to the Lagos State Government.
Bakare stated that the decision followed months of unyielding negotiations, administrative delays, and what the unions described as recurring reversals by government officials regarding the implementation of the 2026 Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) and staff union agreements.
Bakare noted that negotiations appeared to progress on August 31 when the state government and union representatives signed an agreement covering updated allowance structures, tax-exempt benefits, and the settlement of outstanding salary arrears alongside the September payroll.
However, he stated that the September salaries were disbursed without the agreed adjustments or the promised arrears.
He added that the failure to implement the agreement has left university workers with nine months of accumulated unpaid arrears, spanning from January through September 2026.
