Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has said that the 226 beggars arrested during a statewide enforcement operation on Thursday will be sent back to their states of origin.
The individuals were picked up by the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Task Force in collaboration with the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps during a coordinated exercise carried out across various parts of the state.
In a statement after the operation, Wahab explained that the exercise is part of the government’s ongoing clean-up and enforcement campaign aimed at improving public safety and maintaining environmental order.
He said the crackdown focused on street begging, which the government considers a source of environmental nuisance and public disorder in Lagos.
Wahab disclosed that a total of 226 persons were apprehended during the exercise conducted jointly by both agencies.
According to him, the individuals will undergo profiling and documentation before being transported back to their respective states.
He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to sustaining environmental sanitation enforcement across Lagos, noting that the initiative is designed to promote a cleaner, safer, and more organised environment for residents and visitors.
