Low turnout, late arrival of materials affect Adamawa LG election

The local government election held across Adamawa State on Saturday to fill chairmanship seats in the 21 local government areas and councillorship positions in the 226 political wards witnessed low voter turnout.

There were also reports of delayed or non-arrival of electoral materials in some areas in Adamawa State, alongside allegations of irregularities during the exercise.

Despite the concerns, the election was largely peaceful across the state, with no incidents of violence or major disturbances reported in the various wards.

Several residents who monitored the process described the exercise as generally satisfactory, including the incumbent Chairman of Yola North Local Government Area, Hon. Jibril Jimeta, who voted at his Yelwa Ward polling unit.

Jimeta, who is seeking re-election for a second term, acknowledged the low turnout but noted that voter apathy has become common even during general elections.

“I agree that more people should have come out to vote, but even in general elections, voter apathy has long been a thing of concern,” he told journalists covering the election.

The exercise was conducted by the Adamawa State Independent Electoral Commission (ADSIEC).

Speaking to journalists before noon on Saturday, the Chairman of ADSIEC, Alhaji Muhammed Umar, confirmed receiving reports of late distribution or non-arrival of election materials in some locations despite efforts to ensure timely deployment.

He assured that the commission was investigating the complaints and taking steps to address any identified issues.
