Middle East Crisis: Missile hits US embassy helipad in Baghdad, Iraq

Iraqi security officials have revealed that a missile has hit a helipad inside the US embassy complex in Baghdad.

The event was confirmed by two security personnel, the Associated Press reported. On Saturday morning, a plume of smoke was seen rising over the facility in a footage.

The expansive complex is among the biggest US diplomatic installations worldwide. Iran-aligned militias have fired rockets and drones at the site on multiple occasions.

Following the incident, images of smoke and dust billowing over the embassy were also making the rounds on the internet.

The US embassy in Baghdad however did not immediately respond. The embassy rather extended its level four security alert for Iraq on Friday.

The US embassy issued a warning, pointing out that assaults on US citizens, interests, and infrastructure have already been carried out by Iran and militia groups affiliated with Iran.

The groups “may continue to target them,” according to the advisory.

The incident occurred two days after a US military refuelling aircraft crashed in western Iraq, confirming the deaths of four crew members.

In a statement on Friday, the United States central command said the Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker went down at approximately 2pm eastern time on March 12 during operations in the region.
