Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran’s new supreme leader, is hurt but “safe and sound,” the president’s son claimed on Wednesday, providing the first formal explanation for the 56-year-old’s absence since his appointment over the weekend.

“I heard news that Mr Mojtaba Khamenei had been injured. I have asked some friends who had connections,” Yousef Pezeshkian, who is also a government adviser, wrote in a post on his Telegram channel.

“They told me that, thank God, he is safe and sound,” added the son of President Masoud Pezeshkian.

After his father, Ali Khamenei, was killed in an airstrike at the beginning of the US-Israeli war against the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mojtaba Khamenei, a previously unknown but influential behind-the-scenes figure, was proclaimed Iran’s number one.

However, since his appointment by the Assembly of Experts, a clerical body, there had been growing concerns regarding his physical state and whereabouts. The new supreme leader had yet to be seen, much alone speak, in public.

The New York Times reported on Wednesday that Khamenei “had suffered injuries, including to his legs, but that he was alert and sheltering at a highly secure location with limited communication,” citing three anonymous Iranian officials.
