Nigerian music stars Burna Boy and Asake have emerged as the joint most-nominated African artists at the MTV 2025 Video Music Awards, earning two nominations each.
Burna Boy received nods in the Video for Good category for “Higher” and Best Afrobeats for “Tatata” featuring Travis Scott. Meanwhile, Asake secured two nominations in the Best Afrobeats category for “Active” with Travis Scott and “Get It Right” with Tems.
Other African artists also made the nominee list for MTV 2025 video Music Awards, with Rema, Moliy, Tems, Wizkid, and Tyla each receiving a single nomination in the Best Afrobeats category. Ayra Starr stood out with a nomination in the MTV PUSH Performance of the Year category for her song “Last Heartbreak Song.”
Overall, American singer Lady Gaga lead the nominees with 12 nominations including Best Artist of the Year, Song of the Year and Video of the Year.
MTV 2025 Video Music Awards will be held on September 7 at the USB Arena in New York.
