The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has asked the muslims to look out for the crescent moon for Ramadan 1447 A.H on the evening of Tuesday, 17th February, 2026.

Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, the current Sultan of Sokoto and President of NSCIA, declared this in a statement issued to the press and media houses, signed by Prof Is-haq Oloyede, the Secretary-General of NSCIA.

According to the Sultan, he stated that if the moon is sighted on Tuesday, then the Ramadan fast officially begins on Wednesday; if not sighted, then the fast will move to start on Thursday, 19th February, 2026.

He also added that special arrangements has been made for this occasion by the National Moon Sighting Committee (NMSC), in collaboration with the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA).

Furthermore, NSCIA through the Sultan has condemned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for setting up elections during the Ramadan fast. “We are watching very closely and expecting an immediate review,” the statement added.

The council then urged Muslims to remain resolute in their faith, quoting the Quran: “Inna ma’al ‘usri yusra” (“Verily, with hardship comes ease”).

“Allah intends ease for you, not hardship, so that you may complete the prescribed period and proclaim the greatness of Allah for guiding you, and perhaps you will be grateful.” (Q. Al-Baqarah 2:185).”
