The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced an indefinite nationwide strike starting at 12:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 7, 2026.
The strike comes amid the Federal Government’s decision to halt the implementation of the revised Professional Allowance Table, a key component of agreements reached after NARD’s 2025 industrial action.
The decision was made at the conclusion of the association’s virtual Extraordinary National Executive Council meeting on Saturday, and it is anticipated to cause more disruptions to healthcare services throughout Nigeria.
In a statement signed by Dr. Shuaibu Ibrahim, the National President of the association, NARD called the situation “unfortunate” and accused the Federal Government of pressuring physicians to take fresh strike action.
Dr. Ibrahim stated that after the protracted strike in 2025, NARD and the Federal Government negotiated a revised Professional Allowance Table, which is what caused the situation.
Improved resident physician compensation packages, including call duty allowances, shift allowances, rural posting incentives, and non-clinical duty payments, were part of the deal.
He pointed out that although the rollout was originally planned for January 2026, complications caused it to be postponed until February. According to NARD, the government now intends to end the procedure by April, which the group claims betrays confidence and goes against earlier commitments.
Additionally, the resident doctors association called for the immediate reversal of the government’s decision and the settlement of all outstanding entitlements.
