NBC says no Nigerian TV or radio station is sanctioned without prior warnings

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has attributed the fines, licence suspensions, and other sanctions imposed on broadcast stations in Nigeria to violations committed by the stations themselves.

The South-East Zonal Director of NBC, Ijeoma Theo-Obodo, made this known on Wednesday in Umuahia, Abia State, during the 13th Vision Africa Training Institute.

She explained that all radio and television stations sanctioned by the commission had previously been issued warnings for breaching provisions of the broadcasting code before punitive measures were taken.

Theo-Obodo said the NBC’s core mandate is to protect the integrity of the airwaves and ensure that audiences are not exposed to offensive or harmful content.

She dismissed claims that the commission acts unfairly or targets specific media houses, insisting that enforcement actions are based strictly on regulatory violations.

She also encouraged members of the public to report offensive broadcasts to the commission for proper investigation and necessary action.

The NBC official further noted concerns about some music content produced under the guise of religious expression, describing certain materials as unsuitable for public broadcast.

She commended the Vision Africa Institute for its efforts in training media professionals on the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in journalism and broadcasting.

Earlier, Alex Otti and Methodist Archbishop Sunday Ndukwo Onuoha urged media practitioners to deploy AI for promoting national unity and development, rather than spreading misinformation or public anxiety.
