NDC deregistration moves embarrassing, baseless — Seriake Dickson

The National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Seriake Dickson, has described moves surrounding the party’s alleged deregistration as frivolous and embarrassing.

Dickson made the remarks during an appearance on Sunday Politics, a programme on Channels Television, while reacting to the recent judgment of the Federal High Court in Lokoja, which overturned its earlier directive ordering the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the NDC as a political party.

According to him, the NDC remains a duly registered political party, stressing that the court ruling did not contain any compulsory order directing Independent National Electoral Commission to deregister it.

He said, “Every action behind the deregistration ruling is frivolous and embarrassing. As it stands, the NDC remains a registered political party.

“What some people are trying to do is create flimsy excuses to undermine, destabilise, weaken and scatter the political opposition.”

Seriake Dickson predicts massive loss for Bola Ahmed Tinubu, APC in 2027

The National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Seriake Dickson, has expressed confidence that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress will be voted out in the 2027 general elections.

Dickson made the statement on Sunday during an interview on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television, while discussing the NDC’s readiness for the upcoming polls.

According to him, the NDC believes the current administration has failed to meet the expectations and aspirations of Nigerians, adding that this could shape the outcome of the 2027 elections.

He, however, stressed that the decision ultimately lies with Nigerians and called for an open political space, warning against what he described as “contrived legal shenanigans” aimed at weakening opposition parties through the judiciary.

Dickson also appealed to the judiciary to remain impartial and resist attempts by desperate politicians to undermine Nigeria’s democracy.

People seeking flimsy excuses to weaken opposition — Seriake Dickson

The National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Seriake Dickson, has alleged that certain individuals are deliberately seeking excuses to weaken and destabilise opposition political parties in Nigeria.

Dickson made the statement during an interview on Sunday Politics, a programme on Channels Television, while reacting to the recent judgment of the Federal High Court in Lokoja, Kogi State, which ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to register the NDC as a political party.

According to him, attempts to undermine opposition parties have become a worrying trend, as some actors continue to search for flimsy reasons to disrupt and weaken alternative political voices.

He cited the situation involving the African Democratic Congress, noting that controversies also surfaced during the party’s National Executive Committee meeting where David Mark and other leaders were formally appointed.

Dickson added that the NDC, which he described as a fast-growing party with credible and dynamic leaders, is now facing similar challenges despite its rising profile in the political space.

BACKSTORY:

The latest controversy surrounding the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) comes amid growing political tension ahead of the 2027 general elections. The party has been in the spotlight following a Federal High Court ruling in Lokoja that reversed its earlier directive ordering the Independent National Electoral Commission to register the NDC as a political party, a move the party says is now being misinterpreted as grounds for deregistration.

At the same time, opposition politics in Nigeria have been witnessing increasing realignments, internal crises and legal battles, with parties such as the African Democratic Congress also facing leadership-related controversies. These developments have heightened concerns among opposition figures over what they describe as deliberate attempts to weaken alternative political platforms.

Against this backdrop, NDC leader Seriake Dickson has accused political actors of using legal and institutional means to destabilise opposition parties, while insisting that growing public dissatisfaction with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration could shape the outcome of the 2027 elections.
