The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has made several arrests and seizures in a nationwide crackdown on drug trafficking, with a particular focus on the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.

The most notable arrest was Ofoma Sunday, a Brazilian returnee who was intercepted for ingesting 111 wraps of heroin. In a separate incident, another Brazilian returnee, Ukachukwu Frank Ikechukwu, was also arrested for internally concealing cocaine. The NDLEA also apprehended a businesswoman who attempted to board a flight while concealing methamphetamine in her underwear.

A Coordinated Effort to Dismantle Drug Cartels

The arrests at the Lagos airport are part of a larger, ongoing effort by the NDLEA to dismantle drug trafficking organizations. The agency’s operations are not limited to airports; they have conducted successful raids and seizures across several Nigerian states, including Adamawa, Zamfara, Yobe, Taraba, and Edo. These operations have led to the recovery of a wide variety of illicit substances, including tramadol, cannabis (skunk), and methamphetamine.

In Adamawa, operatives recovered over 233,800 tramadol pills in three separate raids.

In Zamfara, a significant bust led to the seizure of 109 bags of cannabis weighing over 1,000 kilograms.

In Edo, the NDLEA destroyed two cannabis farms spanning 4.5 hectares, with an estimated yield of over 11,000 kilograms.

These successes underscore the agency’s commitment to its mission. According to NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd.), the busts represent a “significant milestone” in the determined effort to dismantle drug cartels and protect Nigerian youth from the scourge of illicit substances.
