2027: Nigeria’s next president should emerge from South — Amaechi

Rotimi Amaechi, the former minister of transport, made a compelling case yesterday for the next president of Nigeria to come from the South, stating that character, ability, and competence rather than regional entitlement or dominance should define leadership.

The 2027 general elections, according to Amaechi, will be a turning point for Nigeria and a conflict between “ordinary Nigerians and the entrenched political elite,” he said in an interview on Channels Television.

He called on people to band together in support of a fresh national movement that places a higher priority on responsibility, equity, and substantive change.

The former governor of Rivers State reiterated his position, saying that it was time for the South to take back control of Nigeria and that it should be done on the basis of merit, adding that the next president should emerge from the south.

He said: “Nigeria belongs to all of us. We cannot sustain a democracy where one region dominates while others are locked out. The South has capable leaders. It’s time to restore balance and deliver real results.

“This election is no longer about party loyalty. It is Nigerians versus the political elite. If you want change, real change, then it’s time to rise. The South is ready to lead. We’re building a platform that gives every Nigerian a voice, and hope.”

As part of a larger opposition coalition, the former minister sided with the African Democratic Congress(ADC). He also disclosed that the coalition is working to register a new platform, the African Democratic Alliance, or ADA, which he says is being unjustly prevented from doing so by the Independent National Electoral Commission, or INEC.

Amaechi emphasised his record of public service, recalling how, in his six months as Rivers Governor, he addressed insecurity and gave education and rural development top priority.

He claimed that this administration was worse than the last one while denouncing the All Progressives Congress, or APC, for mishandling the economy.

He stated: “If I were president today, Nigerians would not be this hungry. I built schools in every village with computer access, created jobs through agricultural programs, and ensured transparency in spending. I’ve shown what’s possible with the right leadership.”

“This isn’t about me, it’s about Nigeria. Once the platform is in place, we’ll talk about who runs. But yes, I am ready and capable to lead this country,” he added.
