Nicolas Maduro, the president of Venezuela, was detained in a New York jail on Saturday, just hours after he was taken into custody by American special forces and flown out of his nation, which Donald Trump declared would be effectively under US authority.
Following a lightning-fast predawn raid in which troop apprehended Maduro and his wife while airstrikes blasted locations in and around Caracas, the US president made his declaration.
Shortly after dusk, a US government aircraft carrying Nicolas Maduro touched down at a military installation. He was then flown by helicopter to New York City, where the pair was scheduled to be charged with weapons and narcotics trafficking.

The White House shared a video on X of Nicolas Maduro, handcuffed and wearing sandals, being escorted by federal officers through a US Drug Enforcement Administration facility in New York.
“Good night, happy new year,” the 63-year-old leftist is heard saying in English.
Trump said he was “designating people” from his cabinet to be in charge in Venezuela but gave no further details.
Trump also hinted at the possibility of deploying US soldiers, stating that Washington is “not afraid of boots on the ground.”
However, he seemed to rule out the chance of the opposition seizing power and said that he may collaborate with Nicolas Maduro’s vice president, Delcy Rodriguez.
Trump’s interest in Venezuela’s enormous oil reserves was one thing that made evident.
“We’re going to have our very large United States oil companies… go in, spend billions of dollars, fix the badly broken infrastructure,” he said.
“We’ll be selling large amounts of oil.”
