The Nigerian Army mutiny allegation has been firmly dismissed by military authorities, who described recent reports suggesting unrest among soldiers as false and misleading. The Army warned that such claims are capable of undermining national security and public confidence.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, stated that the allegation of a mutiny in the Nigerian Army circulating in the media was based on anonymous and unverifiable sources. She stressed that the report does not reflect the true position or conduct of officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army.

Anele made it clear that there has been no threat of mutiny within the Nigerian Army, noting that mutiny remains a serious offence under military law. She added that such actions are completely against the service ethos of discipline, professionalism, and loyalty to the Constitution and the Commander in Chief.

The attention of the Nigerian Army has been drawn to an online publication alleging that soldiers are threatening mutiny over salaries and allowances. We view the report as false, misleading and deliberately sensational, designed to undermine public confidence and national security.

“At no time has there been any threat of mutiny within the Nigerian Army. Mutiny is a grave offence under military law and alien to the ethos, discipline and professionalism of Nigerian Army personnel, who remain loyal to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces,” part of the statement read.

She further explained that any grievances within the military are handled through established internal procedures rather than public or unofficial platforms. According to her, the Nigerian Army mutiny allegation ignores the structured channels already in place to address welfare concerns.

The Army also clarified that promotion increments account for only a small portion of soldiers’ total earnings. It explained that military remuneration includes consolidated salaries, rank-based allowances, operational, field, and hardship allowances, as well as other entitlements tied to deployment, qualifications, and responsibilities.

Anele stated that the Nigerian Army, in collaboration with the Armed Forces of Nigeria and relevant government agencies, is implementing welfare reforms aimed at improving troop wellbeing. These reforms include periodic salary reviews, improved accommodation, better medical services, and enhanced insurance packages for personnel and their families.

The Army added that the Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu remains committed to the welfare and operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces. It reaffirmed that the focus remains on strengthening morale and capacity as security agencies confront Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
