The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said the drop reflects a marginal improvement in price stability, offering a brief relief after months of sustained inflationary pressure across the country.

In its statement, NBS explained that the Consumer Price Index declined to 127.4 in January 2026, representing a 3.8 point decrease from 131.2 recorded in the previous month. The agency added that headline inflation eased to 15.10 percent, while the month on month rate stood at minus 2.88 percent.

“In January 2026, the headline inflation rate eased to 15.10%, down from 15.15% in December 2025.

“On a month-on-month basis, the headline inflation rate in January 2026 was -2.88%, which was 3.42% lower than the rate recorded in December 2025 (0.54%). This means that in January 2026, the rate of increase in the average price level was lower than the rate of increase in the average price level in December 2025,” NBS stated on Monday.

The Nigeria inflation rate also reflected improvements in food prices, with food inflation dropping to 8.89 percent in January from 10.84 percent recorded in December. Analysts say the moderation could be linked to seasonal supply factors and easing logistics constraints.

Recall that Nigeria inflation rate had climbed to 15.15 percent in December 2025, raising concerns among households and businesses already battling high living costs. While the January figures suggest a slowdown, many Nigerians say prices of essential goods and services remain high.

Despite the decline in Nigeria inflation rate, citizens across the country still continue to lament the rising cost of living, stressing that everyday expenses still feel overwhelming for average earners.
