Police fully deny assassination attempt on Yerima, the naval officer in heated face-off with Wike

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has rejected claims that a Nigerian Naval officer, Lt. Ahmed Yerima, survived an assassination attempt in Abuja, describing the claims as false and unverified.

The denial follows reports on social media and news sites that Yerima was being followed by unidentifiable black-clad individuals in two unmarked Hilux vans without license plates in Abuja.

The chase reportedly started at the NIPCO petrol station on the Kubwa Motorway at 6:30 p.m. and proceeded to Gado Nasco Way.

According to reports, Yerima used a “strategic manoeuvre” to avoid the attackers during a fast-paced pursuit.

The reports sparked conjecture that connected the purported occurrence to the officer’s recent altercation with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike regarding a contentious land distribution in Abuja.

The command’s spokesman, SP Josephine Adeh, called the allegation completely untrue in a statement released on Sunday night, pointing out that no such occurrence had been reported or documented anywhere in the FCT.

“The attention of the FCT Police Command has been drawn to publications circulating on social media alleging an attempted assassination on Lt. Ahmed Yerima.

“The command wishes to categorically state that no such incident has been reported or recorded anywhere within the Federal Capital Territory.

“The public is advised to disregard this false information and desist from spreading unverified claims capable of causing unnecessary panic,” the statement read.

The public was advised by the PPRO to stay alert and notify the closest police division of any suspicious activities.

Recall that Yerima and Wike were involved in a heated exchange on November 11 over a contested site in Gaduwa District that was allegedly owned by Vice Admiral Zubairu Gambo (retd), a former chief of naval staff.

Videos that went viral showed Yerima preventing Wike’s team from accessing the property while on security detail.

The minister challenged Yerima for reportedly attacking Federal Capital Development Authority employees who had gone to stop the continuing construction and accused the retired military leader of engaging in unlawful development on the property.
