Ex Inspector General of Police Solomon Arase dies in Abuja
Solomon Arase, a former Inspector General of Police (IGP), has died.

On Sunday, August 31, 2025, the former police chief passed away at Abuja’s Cedarcrest Hospital.

The former inspector general retired in 2016 after serving as Nigeria’s 18th Inspector-General of Police.

Ex Inspector General of Police Solomon Arase

He oversaw the police force’s top intelligence division, the Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Bureau, prior to being appointed IGP.

Arase was born in Edo State’s Owan West Local Government Area on June 21, 1956. He attended Ahmadu Bello University to study political science, graduating in 1980. On December 1, 1981, he joined the Nigeria Police Force.

He later obtained a Law degree from the University of Benin as well as a Master’s degree from the University of Lagos.

Throughout his career, he held a number of important roles, such as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of intelligence and Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State.

Additionally, he was a Fellow of the Nigerian Defence Academy and participated in a United Nations peacekeeping assignment in Namibia.

Arase reached the required retirement age and left the Police on June 21, 2016.

In January 2023, the late President Muhammadu Buhari named him Chairman of the Police Service Commission. In June 2024, President Bola Tinubu dismissed him from office.
