A gas cylinder exploded at the plumbing market on Uga Street, close to Onitsha Bridge Head Market in Anambra State, leaving one person dead and six injured.
According to a statement released on Saturday by SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Anambra State Police Command in Awka, the event happened on Friday while a welder was working on carbide-containing metal.

The deceased has been placed in a mortuary, and the six victims who were saved from the incident are presently being treated in the hospital.
“Police Operatives attached to the Onitsha Head Bridge Divisional Police Headquarters on the 16th of May 2025 complemented the rescue efforts by good-spirited individuals on the six victims of a gas cylinder explosion at a plumbing market, along Uga Street, which regrettably recorded one death.
“Preliminary information revealed that the welding gas cylinder exploded as the welder was working on a metal due to exposure to excess heat.”

According to the police, its officers have taken action to safeguard the area and stop criminals from using the circumstances to conduct crimes.

Meanwhile, in a similar incident, a gas/ fuel station exploded around the Airforce base area of Aba road express way in Port Harcourt, causing severe damage to neighboring buildings and several vehicles as well as business around the area however, there were fatalities recorded.
The Rivers state fire service thankfully arrived the scene after residents and passers by raised alarm on sighting the gas station ablaze.
