Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umar Bago, has pledged N1 billion to assist victims of the recent flooding in the Mokwa Local Government Area.

During a visit to assess the flood damage, he met with affected residents and made the announcement, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

In addition to the donation, the governor instructed the Ministry for Land and Survey to issue a Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) to the Federal Government.

This will expedite the construction of resettlement homes for those displaced by the floods. Just days before, President Bola Tinubu had approved a N2 billion fund from the Federal Government to aid in resettling flood victims in Mokwa.

The NAN report highlighted Governor Bago’s commitment to providing land and services for resettlement. To further support the victims, the state government has also allocated ten trucks each of rice, beans, maize, millet, and sorghum.

Governor Bago assured that all donations would be carefully distributed through a committee led by Deputy Governor Mr. Yakubu Garba. He emphasized that the state government aims to not only provide immediate relief but also assist victims in rebuilding their lives.

To expedite the relocation process, the governor has directed that the C of O be issued to the Federal Government for the construction of new homes. While waiting for the housing project to commence, arrangements will be made to move victims from Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps to safer temporary locations.

Governor Bago expressed gratitude to the Federal Government, donor partners, and individuals who have contributed to the relief efforts, and he called for ongoing support from compassionate Nigerians.

The Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Abdulmalik Daji, along with other dignitaries, including the Etsu Nupe and Chairman of the State Council of Traditional Rulers, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, and former Deputy Governor Alhaji Mohammed Ketso, praised Governor Bago for his proactive response and humanitarian efforts.

The flooding in Mokwa Local Government Area began on May 29, resulting in hundreds of deaths, the displacement of thousands, and significant destruction of homes and infrastructure. In response, President Bola Tinubu activated the National Emergency Responder Centre to coordinate recovery and resettlement efforts in the affected areas.

Several prominent Nigerians have also made financial contributions to support relief efforts. The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, explained that the flooding was caused by heavy rainfall and a blockage of the River Dingi, dismissing claims that it was due to structural failures at the Kainji or Jebba dams, which remain operational and in good condition.

He noted that the disaster was exacerbated by climate change and unregulated construction that obstructed a normally dry tributary of the River Dingi.
