In the first half of 2025, the Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) seized 53,520.80 kg of various illegal narcotics, worth more than N777 million. This was revealed on Monday in Benin during a media conference to commemorate the 2025 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking by Mitchell Ofoyeju, the NDLEA Commander in Edo.

Ofoyeju, the commander of narcotics, revealed that 28-year-old Esther Abumere, a 300-level student at Ambrose Alli University in Ekpoma, was recently taken into custody by command personnel for drug possession.
Abumere was allegedly selling drugs under the guise of a grocery on campus, according to the commander. Ofoyeju said, “Her arrest sends a strong warning to drug barons that they will be uncovered regardless of the disguise.”
“It is our legal obligation to safeguard all citizens by implementing comprehensive drug supply control and prevention measures,” he continued.

Information about the narcotics that were seized
Ofoyeju disclosed that 31 grams of Colorado, a strong synthetic form of cannabis, 763 grams of Canadian Loud, another robust strain of cannabis, and various amounts of Tramadol capsules were among the substances discovered in Esther Abumere’s possession.

146 tablets of Swinol (56g), 93 tablets of Rohypnol (30g), and 56 tablets of Molly (25g) were among the other items found in the store where she worked.
The suspect allegedly stated during questioning that she turned to drug sales as a means of repaying a loan she had taken out from a microfinance institution.Additionally, the narcotics commander revealed that during the reporting period, the agency acquired 24 convictions and destroyed 18 cannabis fields.
In accordance with its purpose, the command successfully rehabilitated 19 people with drug use disorders and offered brief counseling interventions to 194 clients as part of its rehabilitation efforts.

According to a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by the NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Mr. Femi Babafemi, the agency arrested two suspects, 37-year-old Ibrahim Galadima and 28-year-old Ibrahim Muhammed, last Monday, June 16th, along the Bauchi-Darazo road.

“A total of One Million and Thirteen Thousand (1,013,000) pills of opioids, namely: tramadol, diazepam and exol-5 were recovered from them,” he said.
NDLEA says the bust emphasizes its ongoing efforts to disrupt drug trafficking networks and curb the availability of dangerous substances in communities across the country.
