Breaking: 20 representatives at National Sports Festival die in fatal road crash
A horrific car accident claimed the lives of 20 Kano contingent members on Saturday as they were returning from the just finished National Sports Festival (NSF) in Ogun State.
It was learnt that the car carrying the contingents was involved in the collision in Dakatsalle town, which is 50 miles from Kano’s historic capital.

Sport Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Kano State chapter chairman Zahraddeen Saleh verified the occurrence.
Saleh said those who died included athletes, journalists, medical personnel and administrators.
The State Commissioner of Youth and Sport Development, Mustapha Kwankwaso, has also confirmed the incident in an official statement made available to newsmen in the state, adding that others who sustained injuries were responding to treatment.

Kwankwaso conveyed his profound sadness over the tragic car accident that claimed the lives of Kano State contingent members attending the National Sports Festival – Gateway 2024 in Ogun State.

“On behalf of the Kano State Government and the good people of the state, extended heartfelt sympathies to the affected athletes, officials, and their families.
“This is a deeply painful moment for all of us. We are devastated by the news of the ghastly accident that occurred as our athletes were returning home after representing our great state with pride and commitment. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and the entire sporting community in Kano,” Kwankwaso stated.

Additionally, Kwankwaso expressed gratitude to the first responders and medical staff who helped the victims and gave the public his word that a thorough report of the occurrence would be received and that the proper measures would be taken.
The Commissioner restated the Kano State Government’s dedication to the safety and well-being of all athletes and officials that compete on the state’s behalf at the national and international levels.
