A Director of Research at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Femi Otubanjo, has speculated that Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, may defect to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Thursday, Femi Otubanjo suggested that Fubara could become a major political force within the NDC if he eventually joins the party.
However, he warned that the governor may face serious political setbacks if he defects while the 28 lawmakers opposed to him remain in office, noting that such a situation could weaken his position ahead of the polls.
Femi Otubanjo also described the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State as unfortunate, arguing that Fubara bears some responsibility for the challenges he is currently facing.
He further linked the governor’s rise to power to the political structure of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, suggesting that the arrangement that once supported his emergence has since collapsed.
According to him, Fubara’s political journey has taken a difficult turn, stressing that leadership decisions and alliances have played a major role in his current predicament.
