Party primaries are contests, not wars — Mudashiru Obasa urges politicians

Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has said that party primary elections are merely contests and should not be treated as wars.

Mudashiru Obasa made this known in his Democracy Day message to residents of Lagos State and Nigerians at large.

The statement was issued by his Special Adviser on Research, Media, and Documentation, Adeshina Oyetayo.

In the statement, Obasa emphasized the need for politicians to promote internal cohesion, dialogue, and mutual respect within their parties.

Speaking on the significance of June 12, he described it as a historic date in Nigeria’s democratic journey.

“Every June 12 remains a powerful reminder of the sacrifices of our heroes past and the enduring resilience of Nigerians in the defence of freedom, justice, and democratic values,” he said.

He noted that the day commemorates pro-democracy struggles and reaffirmed confidence in democratic governance as the foundation for national development and prosperity.

“Party primaries are contests, not wars. We must prioritise internal cohesion, dialogue, and mutual respect. Let us resolve differences through democratic means, strengthen our structures, and remain focused on delivering good governance to Nigerians,” he added.

Obasa further stated that a united APC would help consolidate democratic gains and support continued national progress and stability.
