The Peoples Democratic Party has vowed to proceed with its arrangements for the elective National Convention scheduled for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Recall that a Federal High Court in Abuja had ordered the party not to proceed with the convention following a suit alleging INEC violations.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) cannot receive, publish, or recognise any results from the proposed convention unless the PDP satisfies all legal conditions, according to Justice James Omotosho, who presided over the case.

However, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, promised in a statement released on Friday night that the event preparations will continue.

“The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is appalled by the judgement of the Federal High Court Abuja, presided over by Honorable Justice Kolawole Omotosho today, describing it as an assault on Nigeria’s democratic process.”

The PDP however insists that the court’s ruling does not affect its capacity to move forward with the National Convention’s procedures and initiatives to choose new National Officers to lead the Party’s operations for the ensuing four years.

“Our Party notes the recent judgement of the Supreme Court which affirms the supremacy of a political party in the management of its internal affairs.

“The PDP therefore charges its members, Chapter and Organs to remain steadfast and focused on preparations towards the holding of the National Convention of our Party,” the statement read.

Ologunagba further stated that as a party committed to the rule of law, the party “has accordingly directed its lawyers to take immediate action to appeal this judgment in our unwavering determination to uphold, defend and promote multi-party democracy in our country”.
