A 26-year-old man has been detained by the Department of State Services (DSS) on suspicion of being engaged in the recent attack on Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) 2023 presidential candidate, in Benin City, Edo State.
On February 24, Peter Obi, Chief John Oyegun, the former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and a number of leaders and members of the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC) narrowly escaped death when armed men opened fire during a political gathering in Benin.
Shortly after the assassination attempt, a man identified as Udeme Monday Stephen allegedly took to his X handle, @stevetom788, claiming responsibility and issuing further threats against Peter Obi.

“We warned Obi against his entrance into Edo State, but he mistook our resolve for his Obidiots online noise. Thank his stars he (Obi) survived this one…
“I learnt he’s going to my Rivers State… Na my men go handle that one and dem no dey miss target… Speak no peace to a bastard and wish him no long life, for he’s destined to die,” Stephen posted.
Stephen claimed online that Peter Obi was lucky to have escaped in Benin and vowed that the former presidential candidate would not be as fortunate next time.

According to sources, the suspect has been taken into custody, according to Zagazola Makama, a security and counterinsurgency specialist in the Lake Chad region.
On Monday, Makama announced this via a post on its official X account.
According to the piece, a top security source disclosed that DSS agents started a covert investigation as soon as the threat was made, using forensic equipment to track down and capture the suspect.
