Peter Obi – I’ll retire to Onitsha, teach & inspire children

Former Anambra State Governor and former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has revealed that after his years in politics and business, he hopes to retire as a secondary school teacher in Onitsha, where he can continue shaping the lives of young Nigerians through education.

Obi made the remark on Friday while addressing final-year students of Dennis Memorial Grammar School (DMGS), Onitsha, during activities marking the International Day of Education. His visit also coincided with the school’s centenary celebrations, as the historic institution turned 100 years old the following day.

Speaking to the students, Obi explained that he had not originally planned to visit the school but decided to stop by after remembering the significance of both the International Day of Education and the school’s milestone anniversary.

“I was just passing by when I decided to mark the International Day of Education here with you. I told myself there was a need for me to come here and speak to students,” he said.

“I also know that tomorrow will mark the 100 years of existence of this school, so I came to be with you.”

Throughout his address, Obi repeatedly stressed that education remains the greatest investment any young person can make. According to him, knowledge is the most valuable asset for achieving success, regardless of one’s background.

“Education is the most important thing in your life. It is the most important capital and equipment that you need to be successful. The fact that you are here is already a sign that you’re on the path to success,” he told the students.

Encouraging the graduating students to remain focused on their studies, Obi said many of them have the potential to become future governors, presidents and national leaders if they remain committed to learning and personal development.

Drawing from his own life, Obi recalled standing at the school’s gate as a young boy in 1970 to welcome former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon during a visit to the school. He said education later transformed his life, eventually giving him the opportunity to sit with Gowon at the same decision-making table.

“In this school in 1970, I stood at the gate to salute General Gowon and joined other children in singing for him. Through education, I later grew to the point where I sat with him on the same table and made decisions,” he said.

Obi then revealed his personal ambition after public service.

“I hope to retire to Onitsha someday and take up a teaching job to inspire children,” he said, drawing applause from students and staff.
