‘Peter Obi Wants to Divide Nigeria’ — Ex Gov, Sheriff Fires Ahead of 2027

Former Borno State Governor, Ali Modu Sheriff, has stated that the Nigerian Democratic Congress 2027 presidential, Peter Obi is attempting to divide Nigeria.

Sheriff made this claim on Monday during an appearance  in an interview on ‘Politics Today’, a programme on Channels Television.

He made the allegation while responding to the Obi’s recent call on President Bola Tinubu’s resignation over security and economic situations facing the country.

According to him: “Peter Obi, up to this moment, is pursuing the division of Nigeria because he believes in Biafra.

“He never condemns Biafra or IPOB, as he wants to divide Nigeria. He should come out and say if he doesn’t believe in the division of the country.

“Anybody aspiring to lead Nigeria must be someone who stands for Nigeria, not for any section.”

Resign or shelve re-election bid over insecurity, Peter Obi to Tinubu

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election and a leading opposition figure ahead of the 2027 presidential election, Peter Obi earlier on Monday urged on President Bola Tinubu to either resign or shelve any plan to seek re-election

The NDC chieftain further accused the Tinubu-led administration of failing to address the country’s growing insecurity crisis and showing what he described as a lack of compassion for affected Nigerians.

Obi made the call in a statement released on Monday on X, following his visit to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde over the prolonged captivity of schoolchildren abducted more than 50 days ago.

The former Anambra State governor said the Federal Government’s handling of the kidnapping and other security challenges reflected what he described as a collapse of governance, arguing that Nigerians were increasingly feeling abandoned.

Backstory…

Meanwhile, Obi’s most recent call for Tinubu’s resignation comes only twenty four hours after he accused the President Bola Tinubu administration of “grand corruption,” citing N8.83 trillion in unbudgeted spending that a recent International Monetary Fund consultation report highlighted.

In a statement titled “Grand Corruption: Nigeria’s Greatest Threat” shared via his verified X account on Sunday, Obi claimed the 2025 budget did not capture the reported expenditure, adding that the spending bypassed legislative oversight and administrative scrutiny.

He further claimed that the N8.83 trillion is more than 35% of Nigeria’s 2025 capital budget of N23.96 trillion, roughly 2% of the country’s GDP, and more than the combined amounts allotted for health and education.
