The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced that enforcement of the tinted permit policy will resume from January 2, 2026, citing a surge in vehicle-related crimes.
The decision “follows a careful review of emerging security concerns and the need to ensure the safety of all citizens,” according to a statement released on Monday by police public relations officer (PPRO) Benjamin Hundeyin.

The Force clarified that there was no court order restraining it from enforcing the law regulating the use of tinted glass on vehicles.
He pointed out that in order to give drivers time to regularise their paperwork following a court case in October, the force had voluntarily delayed enforcement of the tinted permit.
“Recent trends, however, reveal a disturbing rise in criminal activities perpetrated with the aid of vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass,” the statement reads.

“Some individuals and organised criminal groups have exploited this gap to conceal their identities and facilitate crimes ranging from armed robbery to kidnapping and other violent crimes.”
Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun was cited by Hundeyin as guaranteeing that the enforcement will be carried out legally, professionally, and with regard for citizens’ rights.

In order to guarantee compliance, he advised drivers in need of permits to apply through authorised means.
Recall that in October, the police temporarily suspended the enforcement of the tinted permit policy.
