Federal Capital Territory Police Command has revealed the arrest of at least three members of a car theft syndicate by police officers in Abuja.
According to a statement released on Sunday by the command spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, the arrest came after the Durumi Division got a distress call about the theft of a 2005 model, gold-colored Toyota Corolla with registration number KUJ 208 DA.
According to command’s spokesperson, the car was taken from the owner’s house.
The statement said that the car was traced to a Durumi factory where it was being illegally refurbished.
According to Josephine, one of the suspects was changing the car’s color in an effort to avoid being discovered and speed up the resale process.
She disclosed that a second suspected stolen car, a red Toyota Corolla with registration number GWA 844 CK that had been reported stolen from a Jikwoyi home, was found during a follow-up check of the property.
The three suspects include a mechanic named Ibrahim Mohammed, a painter named David Dalyol, and a man named Steven Musa.
Part of Adeh’s statement read, “During interrogation, they confessed to being members of a car theft syndicate operating across Wuse, Central Area, Jikwoyi, and Bwari axis of the FCT.
“They admitted to stealing several vehicles, refurbishing them, and reselling them as newer models.
“The suspects are currently in custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
“The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ajao S. Adewale, psc, mnips, urges vehicle owners to install tracking devices and other anti-theft systems to aid prompt recovery efforts,” the statement added.
