A leading governorship aspirant under the All Progressives Congress (All Progressives Congress) in Adamawa State, Mustapha Salihu, has withdrawn from the state’s governorship race.

The decision, announced on Wednesday night, reportedly came as a surprise to political observers in the state, especially as Salihu had been considered a strong contender in the contest.

According to a statement released by Mustapha Salihu campaign organisation and signed by the Head of Strategic Communication, Ahmad Sajoh, the withdrawal followed directives from the national leadership of the party.

The statement explained that Mustapha Salihu has stepped down from the governorship primary and will now contest for the senatorial ticket in Adamawa Central Senatorial District.

It further noted that the senatorial primary for the zone had earlier not been conducted when elections were held in other senatorial districts, suggesting internal party arrangements influenced the development.

Political sources also linked the shifting dynamics to key power blocs within the party, with Salihu previously said to enjoy backing from Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, while another aspirant, Ahmed Galadima, is reportedly aligned with the camp of National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu.

The development has further reshaped the political landscape ahead of the APC primaries in Adamawa State.
