2027 elections: Peter Obi reveals he’ll run on Labour Party platform

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) 2023 presidential candidate, has promised his followers that he will run on the party’s ticket in the 2027 elections.

He made the promise in a 7-minute, 16-second video that was making the rounds on the party’s WhatsApp account on Saturday while addressing a group of teenage fans.

Obi clarified to his audience that the government’s mark is clearly seen in the two main opposition political groups, the Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party, or PDP, which seem to be experiencing an internal crisis.

When asked what platform he planned to run the 2027 elections under, Obi responded, “I will still continue to run in the Labour Party.” I belong to the Labour Party.

In response to another query from a young person who seemed troubled by Obi’s apparent indifference to the LP’s predicament, the former governor of Anambra State stated:

“What is happening in the Labour Party and the PDP is caused by the government. Quote me anywhere.

“We had a problem in our party before, in the past. Yar’Adua was the president. I went to him then; he called the INEC Chairman (Prof. Maurice Iwu) and told him I don’t want any problem in any party. We were forced to fix it.

“But today, in all the parties, there are problems. These are deliberate problems caused by the system. These are some of the things I want to clean up if I have the opportunity.

“Parties will function very well because you can’t have a system working without a strong opposition.”

He further urged Nigerians to be accountable for making sure their votes count, since voters ultimately have the final say over the counting of the country’s votes, even if political parties pay agents to handle their interests.

The LP standard bearer urged Nigerian voters and young people not to give up since those who stand to gain from the status quo will also oppose any constructive change.

He also stated that, in his opinion, politicians running for public office ought to have a retirement age.

Obi stated that he would be 65 years old by the time of the 2027 elections and that he would not want to run for office in his 70s.
