“2027 Showdown: Opposition Unites, LP Denies Obi Guarantee”
Kwankwaso that the rumoured merger talks between key parties were fake.
Some reports indicated that Kwankwaso, Obi and former vice president, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party had agreed to enter into some form of alliance against the ruling party before 2027.
The report stated that Kwankwaso reached an agreement that himself and Atiku would serve for four years each as Nigerian president, while Peter Obi would do eight.
But, in an interview with BBC Hausa, Kwankwaso denied the purported agreement, saying that events that unfolded in the previous elections should make some leaders refrain from anything related to the selection of candidates.
According to him, some northerners, “who declared themselves as the leaders of the north”, should allow the people to choose who they really want to be President.
Also clearing the air, Obi, who spoke at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday declared that there was no merger deal between him and any opposition figure.
There are some change advocates who, in themselves, want the removal of President Bola Tinubu in 2027, have stated that it can only be an effective and strong alliance between the most powerful opposition political parties in the country to expel the incumbent All Progressives Congress, APC.
This is in line with the recent words of the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, in the 2023 presidential result, Peter Obi, and that of his New Nigerian Peoples Party, NNPP, counterpart, Rabiu Kwankwaso, who said the talk about actual merging between major parties has been a pretentious gossip.
Change advocates argue that President Bola Tinubu must be ousted in 2027 by bringing in the super alliance of the main opposition political parties across states in the country.
The Labour Party, LP, presidential contestant in the last 2023 election, Peter Obi, and his New Nigerian Peoples Party, NNPP, counterpart, Rabiu Kwankwaso, who made statements to the effect that rumoured merger talks between top parties was false, triggered this.
DAILY POST has reports that some reports had it that Kwankwaso, Obi and the former vice president, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party had resolved to ally against the ruling party ahead 2027.
The outline of that report was that Kwankwaso agreed to a four-year presidency as chief of Nigeria with Atiku, while Peter Obi would do eight.
But he denied the supposed agreement in an interview with BBC Hausa, saying that events that unfolded in the previous elections should make some leaders refrain from anything related to the selection of candidates.
He states that some northern people, “who declared themselves as the leaders of the north,” should allow the people to choose who they really want as President.
Clarifying it all as well, Obi at a news conference in Abuja Thursday, stated there was no merger agreement between him and any opposition figure.
The former governor, though, called on all patriotic Nigerians, especially in the opposition parties, to think of coming together in 2027 to sweep from power the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
No opposition party can solely defeat APC except they all come together- PDP chieftain.
This triggered the statements of Mathias Adache, a chieftain of the PDP in Benue South. “Greediness is the problem with some grey people in this country,” he said.
The opposition will always say elections are hard under this kind of multi-party democracy, he said.
“And regardless of rigging, but there is nothing like this government emerging in the year 2023 with only one opposition party.
“In the last election in 2023, Atiku amassed votes in excess of 6.9 million, while Peter Obi generated votes totaling about 6.1 million, Kwankwaso similarly collecting 1.4 million votes, and Tinubu who clinched the election got 8.7 million votes.
“You can see this tells you that Tinubu has not won votes for the majority. You will have over 14 million votes totaling Atiku, Obi, and Kwankwaso’s votes.
“This means 14 million people voted against Tinubu, while only 8 million voted for him.
“He could win because those 14 million votes were divided. If it was a two-party system like we have in the US and other aforementioned countries, he wouldn’t have made it in this election.
“I would have expected that by now they would be teaming up and preparing to remove this APC, but they are not ready for that.
“I read somewhere that the ruling party was insisting that there was no magic that could help Tinubu lose the 2027 general elections. This is what they say because these people cannot come together”.
LP: No automatic ticket for Peter Obi
Instead, the Labour Party has insisted that former Anambra governor Peter Obi would not get an automatic ticket.
Obi was the party flagbearer in the recently concluded elections after his claim for the major opposition party, PDP.
