The senate president, Godswill Akpabio has stated that rather than opposing the executive, lawmakers whether at the national assembly or senate level were chosen to work together to advance Nigeria.
Speaking at a feature documentary commemorating the second year of the Bola Tinubu administration, Akpabio made the comments.
According to him, lawmakers are chosen to cooperate across party lines for the advancement of the country, not to oppose the president.
Akpabio said that lawmakers are chosen to enact laws that benefit the country, not to engage in political rivalry.
“When elected into the National Assembly, whether in the Senate or the House of Representatives, your constituents will not give you boxing gloves. It’s not a boxing tournament. You are there to work in a bipartisan manner for the interest of Nigeria,” Akpabio was quoted in a statement by presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the Senate President, a mutual dedication to progress is the foundation of the friendly relationship that has existed between the presidency and the national assembly for the last two years.
Akpabio also stated that this is the first time in Nigerian history that the president, vice president, and first lady have all served as senators.
“If you spend all your energy fighting the executive, who will work for Nigeria?” he asked.
He further stated that the legislature is backing efforts to revitalise the economy through local production and job creation.
“We have started the bill for enacting legislation to enable us first purchase automobiles from Nigerian companies before thinking of importing them,” he said.
“We lose billions of dollars annually importing vehicles and other items that can be produced locally,” he added.
