Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has announced his willingness to support the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, if the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) decides to nominate a candidate from the South-East in 2027. Atiku, who was the PDP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, expressed his readiness to back Obi if chosen by the party.
In an interview with BBC Hausa Service, Atiku explained that his candidacy in the 2023 election was due to the open nature of the race. “I have repeatedly stated, even before the 2023 general elections, that if the PDP zones the presidential ticket to the South or specifically the South-East, I will not contest,” Atiku said. “As long as it is the party’s decision, I will respect it. I ran in 2023 because the ticket was open to all party members.”
Atiku also mentioned the potential for a merger between the PDP and the Labour Party, noting that party members would decide his role in the 2027 elections. He indicated that his recent meeting with Obi could signal a possible alliance for the 2027 elections. “It was a routine friendly meeting common among opposition parties. Such interactions are beneficial for Nigeria’s democracy and national interest,” he explained.
Regarding a possible merger, Atiku said, “Yes, it is very possible. We can merge to achieve a common goal. Nothing can stop it if we aim to accomplish that.” He dismissed concerns that selecting a presidential candidate could hinder merger discussions. “That challenge will not arise. The choice of the party’s candidate won’t be an issue,” he assured.
Addressing his continued involvement in politics, Atiku affirmed, “Yes, we can’t remain silent and watch things go wrong. People are suffering, and we are dedicated to improving Nigeria. My age doesn’t prevent younger individuals from pursuing their aspirations. Everyone has the right to aspire to any role in society, politically or otherwise.”
Regarding his potential 2027 presidential bid, Atiku stated, “That depends on my party’s decision. I cannot make any definitive statement now. It is up to the party to decide the direction for the next election. Until then, let’s wait and see.”
