In the statewide address aired Sunday, Governor Fubara said that despite differencing with the court action, his government still upholds the law. Assured that as soon as certified true copies of the judgment enters—that is expected by Friday, March 7, 2025—his government will study and implement them accordingly.

Pending elections, Fubara, also directed Heads of Local Governments Administration to immediately take over the governance of the 23 LGAs. He also announced that the outgoing local government chairpersons should hand over their offices by Monday, March 3, 2025.

“Since caretaker arrangement has been outlawed in the local government system, I hereby direct Heads of Local Government Administration to take over the administration of the 23 local government councils pending the conduct of new elections by RSIEC,” Fubara said.

He, however, told people to remain calm as the government was working on the stabilization of the situation to keep up with delivering its welfare services.

“My exhortation is that while the dear state appears to be back in similar trying times, everyone should hold fort and keep going in his normal daily peaceful activities,” he said.

Such a situation arises under conditions of a highly charged political atmosphere in Rivers State, where factions are holding their breaths in anticipation of the decrees from the Supreme Court and the expected dates for the holding of new local government elections.
