CJN Kayode Ariwoola Retires Officially.

On August 22, 2024, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola formally retired as Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), concluding a prominent legal career marked by his commitment to judicial excellence and reform.

The valedictory session at the Supreme Court in Abuja was a notable event, attended by key figures including Vice President Kashim Shettima, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, and Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, who is slated to succeed him. During the session, Ariwoola underscored the urgent need for judicial reforms to alleviate the heavy caseload burdening the Supreme Court. He expressed concern over the substantial delays caused by cases that should have been resolved at lower appellate levels, thus compromising the right to a fair and timely hearing.

Ariwoola advocated for the appointment of additional judicial officers and measures to reduce the volume of cases reaching the Supreme Court. His call for reform aimed at enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of the judiciary.

The retirement ceremony also featured a public presentation of “Judging With Justice,” a book dedicated to Ariwoola, held at the International Conference Centre in Abuja. This book chronicles his judicial journey and contributions to the Nigerian legal system.

Justice Ariwoola’s legal career began with his appointment as a Justice of the Supreme Court in 2011, following his tenure on the Court of Appeal from 2005 to 2011. His academic journey started at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), where he obtained his Bachelor of Laws degree in 1980 and was called to the Bar in 1981. He became acting CJN in June 2022, following the resignation of Justice Tanko Muhammad, and was confirmed as CJN in October 2022.

His retirement marks the end of a significant chapter in Nigeria’s judiciary, highlighting both his achievements and the ongoing need for judicial reforms.
