Defection: More trouble in PDP, LP as 2 reps join APC

The Labour Party (LP) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have seen fresh wave of defection amid already exisitiing crisis as two members of the House of Representatives, Okolie Lawrence and Akingbaso Olanrewaju, defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday.

Lawrence left the LP, claiming that joining the APC will “bring governance closer” to his voters. Lawrence represents the Aniocha North/Aniocha South/Oshimili North/Oshimili South federal constituency of Delta State.

Olanrewaju, who represented Ondo State’s Idanre/Ifedore federal seat, quit the PDP due to an ongoing internal conflict. He declared that he was supporting President Bola Tinubu’s “ideology and renewed hope agenda” through the APC.

Tajudeen Abbas

Following this, minority Leader Kingsley Chinda protested his defection, claiming that the PDP was not in crisis and bringing up a point of order. However, despite acknowledging the protest, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas carried on with the parliamentary process.

The most recent defections are a part of an increasing trend in the House, where a number of members have recently defected to the APC from opposition parties. The change has increased the power of the ruling party in the lower house, which has alarmed the opposition.
